This is an introductory course for those involved in teaching or managing learning situations for adults. On successful completion of this programme you may wish to consider progression on to the PGCE/Cert Ed.

Vocational competence and qualifications within the area you intend to teach/instruct. Entry is subject to interview


What you will learn

This course will provide the untrained practitioner with an understanding of the essential elements of effective performance in the classroom or other settings including:-

  • a general introduction to the role, responsibilities and styles of teaching adults.
  • an understanding and introductory experience of this role which will enable participants to be aware of and develop the self awareness and confidence necessary when working with learning groups.
  • an introduction to the principles of learning, particularly to those immediately relevant to adult learning.
  • an introduction to those principles of teaching most immediately relevant to effective management of a learning group.
  • an initial practice in the skills of teaching performance with special emphasis on a micro-teaching exercise.
  • an initial practice in the study of communication skills necessary for further progress.
  • an initial practice in the planning and preparing of learning experiences, including use of resources and aids as well as preliminary consideration of principles of assessment, including self-assessment.
  • an opportunity to evaluate and analyse one's own teaching and the teaching of peers.

Course Assessment

Students are required to complete the following assignments:

  • Key principles of delivering learning
  • Learning programmes
  • Planning and preparing sessions, and delivery of a micro-teaching session
  • Learning journal and summative profile
  • Case Studies
