Course overview

This is a flexible course designed to develop a broad yet critical knowledge of contemporary management by focussing on a detailed exploration of the theory and practice of key management areas. It is designed around the needs of practicing or aspiring managers, and is also highly suited as a critical introduction to management for those without much practical experience.


Entry requirements

  • A minimum of a 2:2 Honours Degree. At least 3-5 years management experience. Entry is normally subject to interview.
  • For mature applicants - Direct admissions to programmes for applicants who have been out of full time education for more than two years will be considered based on previous learning or experience. Each application will be considered on individual merit. We recommend an interview with one of our Careers Advisers before submitting your application.

What you will learn

The Postgraduate Certificate stage of the MSc programme is designed to establish a critical introduction to the main areas of management through six taught modules in year 1.

Year 1

  • Corporate Environment: students are introduced to the strategic framework, and the relationships between organisations and their environment.
  • Professional Development and Management Research: students receive a grounding in the techniques and philosophy of research projects. The tools and techniques explored are equally applicable to academic and work contexts.
  • Managing People: this module explores the changing world of work, and offers an understanding of people's performance in the workplace. It explores techniques for optimising the contribution of people to organisational performance.
  • Marketing Systems and Structures: marketing concepts and strategies are introduced and critiqued. The changing nature of contemporary marketing management is explored, and students are encouraged to identify elements of the debate within their own experiences as consumers and stakeholders.
  • Strategic Cost Management: this module is designed to provide a sound grasp of the construction, analysis and interpretation of financial statements, together with financial planning and cost control. It also explores capital investment appraisal techniques.

  • Operations Management: this module explores procedure within organisations, and seeks to encourage a critical awareness of a variety of concepts and management tools available to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.

Year 2

The second year involves a strategic consideration of management, the modules include:

  • Developing Human Potential
  • Strategic Management
  • Advanced Marketing and Communication

The full MSc is awarded upon successful completion of a dissertation in a management area of interest to yourself. The dissertation is 20,000 words in length.
