Key facts

One year, part-time (distance learning/fortnightly tutorials), Higher Education course

Course overview

We currently offer the Foundation Degree on a part-time basis as a 'top-up' to an existing HNC Business Administration. Those wishing to progress to an honours degree will require a further 120 credits which equal 10 modules on the 'top-up'.

Entry requirements

  • HND/HNC Management and Business (or Business Administration) plus access to appropriate work experience.
  • For mature applicants - Direct admissions to programmes for applicants who have been out of full time education for more than two years will be considered based on previous learning or experience. Each application will be considered on individual merit. We recommend an interview with one of our Careers Advisers before submitting your application.

What you will learn

Students wishing to top-up their HNC to a Foundation degree must:

  • Gain accreditation for current/previous work experience leading to the award of an Employment Experience Certificate (60 Credits)
  • Successfully complete the Reflecting on Practice module
  • Successfully complete the Live Project module (20 credits)

Module specifications

  • Employment Experience: work practice requires the student to complete 600 hours (15 weeks) of work experience appropriate to the chosen area of study. This provides the student with a vehicle through which all competencies associated with the work placement can be tested and completed. Work Practice may take the form of work placements and current or previous employment.
  • Reflecting on Practice Module: reflecting on practice seeks to offer part-time students an opportunity to reflect on organisational behaviours, values and practices which have a relationship to their current programmes of study. The module will allow students to observe and test out theoretical concepts introduced in their chosen study areas within a work environment, placement, project or community activity. The students' reflections will include both a critical evaluation of their own performance while in the workplace as well as a review of organisational practices against current academic thinking.
  • The Live Project: a key module for the Foundation Degree programme students where they will work on real problems for an outside organisation. The aim is to build on existing skills developed and further enhance their competencies in teamwork, investigation, negotiation and research. In addition, this module will promote links with a variety of local organisations in both the private and public sectors.

How you will be assessed

  • Employment Experience: 600 hours of work placement (15 weeks) and a log book detailing experiences against a set of criteria
  • Live Project: Preliminary proposal of 1,000 words (10%), final report of 4,000 - 6,000 words (50%) and deliver a twenty minute presentation (40%) to an invited audience of academic staff, students and representatives of the relevant organisations.
  • Reflecting on Practice: portfolio of evidence containing a self-appraisal of the student's needs from the project/placement; a set of criteria by which the learning will be measured; products of work which authenticate the activities undertaken; testimonials from the line managers or mentors; a reflective narrative which critically appraises the work project/placement experience.
