Cutting the Mustard at Jamie’s

A Pembrokeshire College student has proved that he can cut the mustard after joining the high-flying team at Jamie Oliver’s Italian restaurant in Cardiff. Catering student Craig Evans recently returned from a 10 month placement as part of a College bursary scheme. Craig, who completed a three-year catering and hospitality course, said the bursary scheme had been a crucial part of his education.

“The bursary gives students a great opportunity to get real industry experience and feel the pressures of a busy kitchen. Working in high quality places gives you the chance to learn so much from the environment and being exposed to different ingredients, meant I learnt a great deal,” commented Craig.

The bursary scheme allows the College to send students on work placements by funding their travel, accommodation or living costs. It is funded through College fundraising and by the FADE membership, which is an exclusive dining club for the general public.  Jamie’s Italian, head chef Dominic Ashworth said  ‘The bursary gives students great experience working in high intensity situations, when Craig moves on from Jamie’s he will have no problem going to another professional kitchen, he will be able to handle whatever he goes on to do.”

The latest students who are preparing for placements include: James Bottani and Matthew Warlow, who will be undertaking their placements at Jamie’s Italian, Jack Thomas who hopes to go to the Parc Hotel, Cardiff and Laura Scott who has a placement at Pennyhill Park Hotel in Bagshot.
