It may be possible to study this subject on a part-time basis.

This course is designed to deepen students' understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of film. Candidates will study cinema as a medium, as an art form and as an industry. Students will engage with a wide range of different kinds of films, developing skills of observation, critical analysis and personal reflection as well as developing creativity.

Next steps: 

A Level study is primarily intended to provide entry to Higher Education. Subject choices are vital for many degree subjects so students should research university entry requirements if they have specific degree subjects in mind.

Entry requirements: 
Five GCSEs at Grade C or above (or equivalent)
to include:
-English
-Science
-Maths
Normally Grade B in subject or related subject
Mature applicants - Each application considered on individual merit
Entry is normally subject to interview
Federation learners will be admitted as normal after satisfying the entry requirements of their own school
What you will learn: 

AS Level

  • Unit 1, Exploring Film Form: This unit focuses on how features of film construct meaning and emotion. The focus throughout is on the interaction of film and spectator.
  • Unit 2, British and American Film: Students will study the UK and US film industry and the audiences for films produced by these industries. The films produced by both industries will also be studied.

A2 Level

  • Unit 3, Film Research and Creative Projects: In this unit students will develop their research skills and creativity, developing their understanding of their chosen areas of investigation.
  • Unit 4, Varieties of Film Experience: This unit will introduce films from different contexts, extending knowledge of the diversity of film and its effects.

Continuous Assessment
Written Examination
The study of essential skills may be required
Equipment required: 

Students will need to purchase a text book. It would be an advantage to students to obtain a copy of each film studied.
