City & Guilds International Award in Barista Skills (7102-50)
If you work where coffee is served – this includes coffee bars, coffee houses, cafes, hotels and restaurants. This short course provides learners with specialist skills and knowledge in one of the major growth areas of the hospitality industry – the beverage sector.
Is this course right for me?
This one day course has been designed for those who work or want to work as baristas in the hospitality sector.
What are the entry requirements?
- Entry onto this course is subject to an Assessment Referral Report (ARR) which will be completed by the College or Careers Wales prior to starting the course
- One GCSE at grade D or above to include English Language/First Language Welsh or Mathematics/Numeracy
- The learner must be over the age of 19
Current student - what are the entry requirements?
- Successful completion of relevant programme (including skills) and decision from progression board meeting
What will I learn?
Learners will be introduced to the full range of products used in making beverages. They will learn where the products come from, and some of the processes they go through, from growing to the final drink. They will also learn the importance of taking care of the products in order to provide an excellent final result.
Learners will also look at the full range of equipment, identifies safety aspects and how to operate the equipment to deliver the desired drink quality. Learners will bring together the knowledge and skills acquired to produce good quality drinks consistently. Learners will be able to identify and correct problems as they arise.
The course covers the importance of presenting a positive personal image and the use of effective communication techniques.
Learner outcomes include:

- Display drink building techniques
- Serve customers
Will I need to study additional English & Maths skills?
You may need to study an additional skills course depending on:
- the course you are taking at College
- what grades you gained in your GCSE Maths and/or English Language

- Essential Skills Wales (ESW) in Application of Number and Communications
All other courses:
- Upskilling Destination Programme – an hour and half session a week developing essential research skills, critical thinking, and academic writing techniques, supporting literacy, numeracy, digital literacy and employability skills
- A one year GCSE resit course in required subject/s
- Essential Skills Wales (ESW) in Application of Number and Communications, for Progression pathway programmes within the Built Environment Faculty only
For English:
- A one or two year pre-GCSE upskilling course in required subject/s
- Essential Skills Wales (ESW) in Application of Number and Communications, for Progression pathway programmes within the Built Environment Faculty only
For Maths:
- A one year GCSE resit course in required subject/s
- Essential Skills Wales (ESW) in Application of Number and Communications, for Progression pathway programmes within the Built Environment Faculty only
- A two year pre-GCSE upskilling course in required subject/s
- Essential Skills Wales (ESW) in Application of Number and Communications, for Progression pathway programmes within the Built Environment Faculty only
Learners studying on a Jobs Growth Wales (JGW+) programme will be timetabled into literacy and numeracy sessions. To discuss the opportunity of attending a GCSE resit programme, in addition to their JGW+ timetable, please contact skills@pembrokeshire.ac.uk
