This course equates to a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in the new Qualification Framework.


Course overview

The National Diploma is equivalent to three A-levels. If you are interested in working in the areas of computer applications, Microelectronics, Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering or Control and Instrumentation then this may be the course for you.


What you could do after this course

Before beginning your full-time career, you may wish to go on to university to study a Higher National Diploma or degree course. You will be qualified to apply in the areas of electronics and computer-related subjects. Alternatively, it is sometimes possible to find work after the National Diploma, eg as a trainee electronic engineering technician. You could then continue your education on a part-time HNC, HND or BSc course.


Entry requirements

  • Five GCSE's at C or above, including Maths, Science and preferably English Language or a First Diploma in Engineering
  • First Diploma at merit, plus one GCSE (grade C or above) or Key skills Level 2
  • All applicants will be required to bring confirmation of their GCSE results or any other qualification results to an enrolment event before the start of this course
  • For mature applicants - Direct admissions to programmes for applicants who have been out of full time education for more than two years will be considered based on previous learning or experience. Each application will be considered on individual merit. We recommend an interview with one of our Careers Advisers before submitting your application.
  • Entry is normally subject to interview

What you will learn

The National Diploma course consists of 17 units. Studied alongside these units will be key skills: communication, application of number and information computing technology.

How you will learn

  • Discuss technical subject matter
  • Watch demonstrations
  • Work on practical tasks, following verbal and written guidelines
  • Work on technical problems, e.g. using theory to predict what a circuit will do
  • Work on a major individual project

Skills you will develop

  • Use of electronic equipment, e.g. digital meters and oscilloscopes
  • Use of computers and specialist software to design circuit boards etc
  • How to solve technical problems
  • Working safely and an awareness of health & safety issues
  • Ability to work as part of a team
