Course overview

This course is designed to offer students the opportunity to study fitness, exercise and health in a theoretical and practical setting. Experience will be gained in the workplace as well as learning through lecture and practical sessions. It may also be possible to gain industry recognised qualifications whilst completing this course.


Entry Requirements

  • Applicants under 21 must have successfully completed a level three qualification eg A levels, NVQ 3, National Diploma in a related area or equivalent to a minimum of 80 UCAS points.
  • For mature applicants - Direct admissions to programmes for applicants who have been out of full time education for more than two years will be considered based on previous learning or experience. Each application will be considered on individual merit. We recommend an interview with one of our Careers Advisers before submitting your application.
  • A requirement of the course is for applicants to complete a relevant work placement or employment for a minimum of one day per week in their first year and two days per week in their second year of study. This can also be completed as a block e.g five weeks in year one and ten weeks in year two.
  • Students will also need to be actively participating in sport outside of college in order to complete assessed projects.
  • Entry is subject to interview.

What you will learn

This is a programme which allows students to gain credits appropriate to the needs of a variety of settings. The qualification equips the students with the knowledge and skills required for success in future or current employment within the fitness, exercise and health industry.

Modules covered include:

Year one

(students on the Foundation Degree in Fitness, Exercise and Health, Sports Coaching and Performance and Adventure Sports will all follow the same first year programme)

  • Anatomy and Physiology (20 credits)
  • Practical Performance (20 credits)
  • Principles of Coaching (20 credits)
  • Training and Monitoring (20 credits)
  • Work Based Learning (20 credits)
  • Human Nutrition

Year two

  • Exercise Physiology (20 credits)
  • Sport and Exercise Psychology (20 credits)
  • Work Based Learning (40 credits)
  • Exercise for Health in Specific Populations (Fitness, Exercise and Health students only)
  • Health Promotion and Exercise (Fitness Exercise and Health students only)

Expect also to

Students may undertake professional qualifications including Pool Lifeguard, Fitness Instructor, Aerobic / Circuit / Spin Instructor. They will have the opportunity to gain qualifications in first aid and VTCT Sports Massage
