Course overview

This course is particularly relevant to the increase in demand for people working with children to have a higher level of qualification. The Foundation Phase in Welsh schools has created an awareness of the importance of the discipline of Childhood Studies. The course is very suitable for those wishing to work or already working in a supervisory or management role in childcare, education and health settings.


Entry requirements

  • Applicants under 21 must have successfully completed a level 3 qualification e.g. A Levels, NVQ 3, National Diploma in a related area or equivalent
  • All applicants must also be engaged in working with young children, either voluntary or paid employment
  • For mature applicants - Direct admissions to programmes for applicants who have been out of full time education for more than two years will be considered based on previous learning or experience. Each application will be considered on individual merit. We recommend an interview with one of our Careers Advisers before submitting your application.
  • Entry is subject to interview

What you will learn

A flexible part time programme which allows students to gain credits appropriate to the needs of a variety of settings. The qualification equips students with the knowledge and skills required for success in future or current employment.

Year 2

  • Legislation (20 credits level 2)
  • Curriculum matters(20 credits level 2)
  • Child development (20 credits level 2)
  • Trends in child health (20 credits level 2)
  • Summer Module: Management of change (20 credits level 2)

Expect also to

Study the Employment Practice Certificate over 2 years involving 600 hours in the workplace (60 credits).
