This course equates to a BTEC Level 2 Extended Diploma in the new Qualification Framework


Course overview

This course is ideal for anyone considering a career in Health and Social Care and on successful completion, learners will be able to progress on to a Level 3 National Diploma in Health and Social Care or Level 3 Diploma in Public Services. All applicants will have to complete an enhanced CRB check. Potential career routes include ambulance work, homecare assistant, healthcare assistant, community support work, dental nursing, nursing or social work.


Entry requirements

  • Two GCSEs at Grade D or above to include English Language
  • A satisfactory enhanced CRB check
  • For mature applicants - Direct admissions to programmes for applicants who have been out of full time education for more than two years will be considered based on previous learning or experience. Each application will be considered on individual merit. We recommend an interview with one of our Careers Advisers before submitting your application.
  • Applicants will have to complete an online Basic Skills initial assessment at interview
  • All applicants will be required to bring confirmation of their GCSE results and any other qualification results to an enrolment event before the start of this course.

What you will learn

The First Diploma consists of 6 units

  • 2 mandatory units
  • 4 optional units

Units covered:

Mandatory units:

  • Communication and individual rights within the health and social care sectors
  • Individual needs within the health and social care sectors

Optional units:

4 units will be selected from the following:

  • Human lifespan development
  • Vocational experience in a health and social care setting
  • Anatomy and physiology for health and social care
  • Creative and therapeutic activities in health and social care
  • Additional qualifications which will be achieved include: Moving and Handling and Food and Nutrition

Expect also to

  • Attend work placement for two weeks (60 hours in total)

All assessments take the form of continuous assessment through a multiple choice exam, a portfolio of evidence to include: written assignments, case studies, oral presentation and other varied methods
