This course is for nurses who have had a career break and would like to return to nursing, or nurses who wish to return to practice in acute area.
Entry Requirements
Nurses on all parts of the NMC register. Students need to to have been registered on NMC Register (any part).
What you will learn
A joint venture between Pembrokeshire College, Hywel Dda NHS Trust and the University of Glamorgan to enable nurses who have been out of professional practice for a period of time to return to work. The course consists of both clinical and theoretical outcomes and the completion of a minimum of 200 hours in clinical placement and 50 hours of theory in study days at Pembrokeshire College.
Placements are provided in conjunction with Hywel Dda NHS Trust and will be allocated according to student need and Trust availability. There is no cost to students if their application is successful - and some help is given to meet the costs of clinical placement. All students will be interviewed informally by staff of the college and the NHS Trust to assess student requirements and organise a suitable placement.
Synopsis of module content:
- Current issues in professional practice
- Self awareness and professional competence. Structures and organisation of care
- Using relevant literature and research; study skills. Individual care planning
- Effective communication; interpersonal skills, teaching and assessing. Multi-professional team-working
- In addition, to meet the specific learning needs of both nurses and midwives, opportunities will be made available for speciality based topics to be examined
How you will be assessed
Assessment of theoretical outcomes consists of a written assignment of 4,000 words.
Assessment of clinical learning outcomes is by meeting certain competences in clinical placement. A mentor in the clinical area will provide supervision and support.
Additional Qualifications
- Evidence of meeting return to practice requirements of NMC
- 40 CAT points for higher education development at Level 2 or 3 depending on previous education achievement

Further Information
In addition to the required attendance there will also be 5 days statutory training prior to commencement of this course. Please note, start date is flexible according to application numbers.
