Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools NVQ 3
This qualification is designed for those supporting teaching and learning in any type of school: primary (including foundation phase); secondary; special school; pupil referral units (PRUs) etc. They still relate directly to the role of teaching assistant but are broad enough to include new roles and responsibilities:
- Cover supervision
- Pastoral support
- Bilingual support
- Subject support
- Special educational needs and additional support
Level 3 is designed for those who work in a variety of familiar and unfamiliar situations using a range of technical skills. Learners carry out self-directed activities under guidance and may have limited responsibility for directing the work of others.

This award can be gained without you needing to attend classes, sit exams or take written tests. However we do provide workshops which enable you to gain underpinning knowledge and the opportunity to meet others in a relaxed learning environment.

Course content
To achieve NVQ level 3 you will have to complete all six mandatory units.
- Help to keep children safe
- Support children’s learning activities
- Promote positive behaviour
- Develop and promote positive relationships
- Support the development and effectiveness of work teams
- Reflect on and develop practice
- You will also be able to choose four additional units
Course Assessment
This is a work based NVQ which means you will be assessed in the workplace performing real work activities. In addition to observation, there is a range of other methods of assessment such as expert witness observation, professional discussion, accounts and case studies. Your assessor will discuss the most appropriate methods to ensure all requirements are met.
Progression
On completion of the qualification you may wish to progress to
- Childhood Studies Foundation Degree
