Course overview
If you are interested in working in the animal industry, learning more about the wider concepts relating to the management of animals or progressing to an animal related higher education qualification, then this could be the course for you. The course studies the management and behaviour of animals, including domestic, exotic and wild. Implementing good animal health and welfare practices are also considered.
What you could do after this course
This course leads to numerous career opportunities including veterinary nursing work, kennel work, work in the retail trade, welfare organisations and wildlife parks. The National Diploma course provides a stepping stone to higher education, with the possibility of gaining direct entry to Higher National Certificate (HNC), Higher National Diploma (HND) and degree programmes upon completion.
Entry requirements
- Five GCSEs at Grade C or above to include Mathematics and English and preferably Science.
- First Diploma in Animal Care at merit plus 1 GCSE (Grade C or above) or Key Skills at Level 2.
- For mature applicants - Direct admissions to programmes for applicants who have been out of full time education for more than two years will be considered based on previous learning or experience. Each application will be considered on individual merit. We recommend an interview with one of our Careers Advisers before submitting your application.
- Entry is subject to interview.
- All applicants will be required to bring confirmation of their GCSE results and any other qualification results to an enrolment event before the start of this course
What you will learn
The National Diploma consists of 18 units. Work Experience is a mandatory unit, requiring 12 weeks of placement over the two years. Students will work in our animal house on a regular basis developing practical skills with a wide range of domestic and exotic animals.
The National Certificate comprises of 12 units
The National Award consists of 6 units, with Animal Health as a core unit.
