Course overview

A two year course intended for students wishing to join the engineering side of the marine industry. Through a series of practical tasks and lectures, it will provide a sound understanding of marine engineering craft processes, an appreciation of related science and technology and an introduction into the marine craft industry.


What you can do after this course

Marine engine and propulsion systems service and maintenance and marine leisure craft associated activities. Boat building and marine leisure associated activities. Directly into employment or onto ND programmes. Successful students may progress into a modern apprenticeship.


Entry requirements

  • For those under 21 years of age a satisfactory record of achievement, and a good standard of education with a career ambition to work within the marine industry.
  • For mature applicants - Direct admissions to programmes for applicants who have been out of full time education for more than two years will be considered based on previous learning or experience. Each application will be considered on individual merit. We recommend an interview with one of our Careers Advisers before submitting your application.

What you will learn

Major topics covered are routine servicing of marine engines and propulsion systems, engineering bench work (metal work) and welding. Students will also study key skills (information technology, application of number and communications) as part of this course.


Additional qualifications studied:

  • City & Guilds Technical Certificate 2451 Part 1 and 2.
  • In the first year students will also achieve an NVQ Level 1 Performing Engineering Operations and additional OCN Marine Foundation units.

How you will be assessed

Practical work is assessed continuously. At the end of each year two short exams are set by City & Guilds. During each year two practical/written assignments are set which are assessed by City & Guilds, and contribute towards the final grades.


What you may need for your course

Protective clothing. Tools will be provided but students are advised to purchase their own during the course.


Fees

Full time, no course fees.

Workshop fee of £80 is payable at the start of each year.

Minimum £30 stationery costs.
