This course will prepare you for industry and is aimed at learners hoping to become qualified stylists.  During the course you will learn how to cut, perm and colour hair.  You will also undertake salon reception duties, learn how to give client consultations and how to promote salon services and products.

Is this course right for me?

This qualification prepares you for industry and is suitable for those hoping to work as a stylist.

This practical course gives you an insight into the industry.  During the year you will study all aspects of hairdressing and build up your knowledge and technical skills in order to become a professional hair stylist.

This course will also include evening commercial sessions which you will be expected to attend to gain commercial experience.  Therefore, you will be required to make your own transport arrangements.

Please note that learners are not allowed to wear facial piercings on this course.

Eligibility (Level 2)

This course is available to learners that have the entry requirements for a Level 1 programme but show the ability to work at a Level 2 standard.  Successful completion of a practical assessment in the first 6 weeks will be required to assess ability to meet the skills requirements of the accelerated programme.  In instances where this assessment is not passed, learners will complete the Level 1 programme.

  • Two GCSEs at grade D or above (may include one relevant equivalent) to include English Language/First Language Welsh
  • Good personal presentation and communication skills are required
  • Each application is considered on individual merit
  • Entry is subject to attending a course information session or informal interview
  • Successful completion of relevant programme (including skills) and decision from progression board meeting

Units you will study include:

  • Advise and consult with clients
  • Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
  • Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work
  • Style and finish hair
  • Set and dress hair
  • Cut hair using basic techniques
  • Colour and lighten hair
  • Cut men’s hair using basic techniques
  • Perm and neutralise hair

You will also be required to improve your Welsh speaking skills for the workplace.

You will also have the opportunity to take part in both internal and external competitions.

Future careers include qualified hairdresser/stylist with a goal of moving to a more technical or supervisory role within the industry or progression to Level 3 Hairdressing (if you complete the Level 2 programme).

  • You will need to pay a £30 hairdressing workshop fee each year before you start the Level 1 course
