Food Beverage Service Course

Gain recognition for work undertaken and learn, practice and develop skills required for employment and/or career progression in Front of House and Kitchen within the Hospitality & Catering sector; such as bar staff/managers, hospitality or restaurant assistants/managers or kitchen assistants and chefs.

We offer apprenticeships in the following routes;

Is this course right for me?

Gain recognition for work undertaken and learn, practice and develop skills required for employment and/or career progression in Front of House and Kitchen within the Hospitality & Catering sector. People of any age can undertake an apprenticeship in Hospitality & Catering. We offer Apprenticeships at Level 2 & 3 and access is subject to interview. Apprenticeships comprise of:

  • An NVQ qualification (competence based and assessed in the workplace)
  • Technical qualification (knowledge based and assessed via online examinations)
  • Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Literacy Qualifications unless you are exempt
  • To apply for an apprenticeship, you must have an employer willing to employ you for the duration of your apprenticeship.

Your employer will need to:

  • Provide us with evidence of suitable insurance and evidence of your employment status
  • Be happy to discuss Health and Safety procedures with your assessor
  • Pay you the appropriate national minimum wage
  • Contribute to monthly planned assessor visits/appointments to observe you and discuss your progress

Transport: Please note that for apprenticeship courses the college day would normally end anytime between 5pm – 7pm, depending on the apprenticeship pathway you are following. As college buses leave at 4pm, you will need to ensure you have your own transport in place.

  • You will be expected to be in relevant job role
  • Each application is considered on individual merit
  • Entry is subject to attending a course information session or informal interview
  • Learners must be at least 16 years old

These qualifications provide the necessary skills for those working in hospitality roles, including Teamwork, Food Safety, Customer service.

Level 2 Food & Beverage Service is for those in waiter or bar roles; taking orders and payments, setting up tables or bar, serving food/drink/snacks and maximising sales in a discreet and professional manner.  You will also have a choice between a number of additional optional units dependent upon the job role.

Qualification: City & Guilds Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Food and Beverage Service (7132-05) and Technical Certificate Level 2 Certificate in Hospitality and Catering Principles (7091-32) (Apprenticeship route only)

Level 2 Food Production & Cooking is for those in cook or chef roles. You will develop your skills and knowledge in ensuring safe, hygienic and secure work environments to prepare, cook and serve meals and will have a choice between a number of optional units dependent upon the job role.

Qualification: City & Guilds Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Food Production & Cooking (7132-06) and Technical Certificate Level 2 Certificate in Hospitality and Catering Principles (7091-32) (Apprenticeship route only)

Level 2 Kitchen Services is for those in kitchen assistant roles. You will develop your skills and knowledge in ensuring safe, hygienic and secure work environments when cooking, storing items, disposing of waste. You will also have a choice between a number of additional optional units dependent upon the job role.

Qualification: City & Guilds Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Kitchen Services (7132-14) and Technical Certificate Level 2 Certificate in Hospitality and Catering Principles (7091-32) (Apprenticeship route only)

Level 2 Professional Cookery is for those in chef/cook roles; the qualification supports key areas of development in working relationships, Health, Safety and Security and Food Safety as well as a choice between a number of optional units.

Qualification: City & Guilds Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Professional Cookery – Preparation and Cooking (7132-07) and Technical Certificate Level 2 Certificate in Hospitality and Catering Principles (7091-32) (Apprenticeship route only)

Level 3 Professional Cookery is for those in sous chef or senior chef/cook roles; the qualification supports key areas of development in working relationships, Health, Safety and Security and Food Safety as well as a choice between a number of optional units.

Qualification: City & Guilds Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Professional Cookery – Preparation and Cooking (7133-01) and Technical Certificate Level 3 Certificate in Hospitality and Catering Principles (7091-33) (Apprenticeship route only)

Level 3 Hospitality Supervision & Leadership is for those in team leader and/or supervisory roles such as Front of House, Reception, Duty Supervisor/Manager within the Hospitality Industry.

Qualification: City & Guilds Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Hospitality Supervision and Leadership (7250-02) and Technical Certificate Level 3 Award in Hospitality Supervision and Leadership Principles (7108-12) (Apprenticeship route only)

Learners are able to complete either the full qualification or certain units or elements through the medium of Welsh/bilingually. Visit our Welsh Language in the College page to find out what else is available to you.

  • Continuous assessment during the course
  • Practical assessment during the course
  • Portfolio of evidence
  • Workplace evidence
  • If taken as an apprenticeship then reviews with your assessor and employer will take place every 1-2 months and you will be expected to have developed your skills and knowledge between each review

This course can lead to numerous career opportunities within: Hotels, Restaurants, Hospitality Events, Catering Events or Bars.

Following successful completion of this course learners could look to progress to a higher level course at the College, seek an appropriate Apprenticeship or go directly into employment.
