Puffin Produce Visit

For the Spring 2010 Term the ‘Learn about Food from Farm to Fork’ course is looking at locally produced fruit and vegetables.

The learners have already enjoyed a fascinating tour of Puffin Produce with Beverley Humphreys, Puffin Produce Company Secretary.

They learned how potatoes delivered from Pembrokeshire farms are stored and then processed by grading, washing and packaging to be distributed throughout Wales and to predominately ASDA stores.

Beverley described the strict Quality Control procedures to produce potatoes to meet the specifications required by ASDA.

The students were given the opportunity for a question and answer session over coffee and all agreed it had been a very interesting visit and were looking forward to trying the different varieties of potatoes that they had learned about.

The class is held at WI House, Prendergast, Haverfordwest on Wednesday mornings. The aim of the course is to learn about how food is produced locally and the processing techniques involved.
