ColegauCymru ‘Learner of the Year Award’ was recently presented to Pembrokeshire College student and Paralympic champion Jacob Thomas.
ColegauCymru / Colleges Wales is the national organisation representing all 17 further education (FE) colleges and two FE institutions in Wales. The annual awards ceremony celebrates outstanding learners and teachers across Wales. Kate Williams, Health and Social Care lecturer at Pembrokeshire College was also shortlisted to the last three for ‘Teacher of the Year’.
'We are so proud of Jacob – his achievements and his attitude to college life and study. We are privileged to have been able to nominate him for this award, which he so deserves,' Sharron Lusher, Principal.
Jacob who is a Paralympic boccia champion and sports diploma student at Pembrokeshire College, has touched many people’s lives through his sporting achievements, his participation in the GB Paralympics and his dedication to learning. Jacob is a tremendous ambassador for both his sport and the College – he is truly an inspiration to everyone. "I really enjoy the playing the sport that I love, representing my country and pleased with all my achievements," said Jacob.
Sports lecturer Andrew Thomas who teaches Jacob commented: “Having Jacob at the College provides a very positive role model for prospective students with disabilities who are looking at their study options. Jacob has a real ‘can do’ attitude and is a great ambassador for the College. Jacob’s presence on the sports course shows that with some forethought the curriculum can be adapted to fit learners with disabilities.”
Jacob is a positive role model, not only for other young people with disabilities, but also for his able-bodied classmates, friends and family. Whilst preparing for the 2016 Paralympics Jacob has also been invited to visit local primary schools to talk about his experiences both at the games and how he copes living with a disability and attending the College. There are many things that can be learnt from Jacob and his determination to be actively involved in the College community and the sport he loves.
