Six months after completing their A-levels and Extended Diplomas, former students were invited back to Pembrokeshire College for the College’s first annual awards ceremony where their outstanding academic achievements were recognised.
On Thursday 18 December almost 40 former students were joined by 150 guests, lecturers and representatives from local businesses, all looking to celebrate the phenomenal success of students during academic year 2013/14.
The awards ceremony was opened with a spectacular laser light show by Future Harp followed by a brief welcome from College Principal, Sharron Lusher, which saw her highlight some of the outstanding achievements of the College’s former students during 2013/14.
As well as recognising the academic success of those students attending the ceremony, the evening also recognised students who had achieved sporting excellence as well as success in competitions across a number of curriculum areas.
College Principal, Sharron Lusher, commented: “Tonight is about your success, your tremendous achievements, and about taking the time to celebrate those achievements. What you have done is ultimately down to your own innate ability, specialised skills and hard work.” She went on to note some of the highlights from 2013/14 as: 33 percent of A-level entries being awarded A/A* grades and 37 percent of diploma students being awarded Distinction/Distinction* allowing students to progress to prestigious universities across the UK including Oxford University.
She also highlighted the College’s success in WorldSkills competitions with a phenomenal nine students making it through to the WorldSkills final. Securing several medals and highly commended certificates led to the College – one of the smallest in the UK – being ranked eighth in the medals table, out of over 350 colleges nationwide; an outstanding achievement for the College and its students.
The evening was rounded off by College band Baked Goods who treated the audience to a high-energy mix of original tracks and popular classics.
