Employer Guide

More reasons to train your staff

Trained employees feel more valued and motivated, thus reducing staff turnover. Through advanced training they could make your business more effective, productive and competitive. Apprentices can bring new ideas and innovation to your business keeping you ahead of the competition. Your employees will be learning new skills and techniques that could have an immediate impact on your bottom line.

What is an Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are a mix of classroom and practical competence designed to improve productivity by developing skills and knowledge directly related to your business. Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes designed around the needs of employers which lead to nationally recognised qualifications. Specially designed to support employees, the apprenticeship programme helps to raise their level of competency and performance to a high standard enabling them to effectively fulfil their role within your business. To be eligible for the programme employees will need to be at least 16 years old, employed for at least 16 hours per week and earning the minimum wage.

Are there any costs involved?

An apprentice will receive their training at no cost to your business. You are, however, responsible for the salary of your apprentice which should reflect their age and experience. You will also be required to allow the employee time to be assessed in the workplace on a monthly basis and time to attend College for specific occupational routes.

What is a Traineeship?

A Traineeship is for young people aged 16-17 in Wales; although some individuals aged 18 may be eligible who have just left school or college. It is designed to give you the skills you need to get a job or progress to further learning at a higher level such as an Apprenticeship or Further Education.

Where can it get you?

A Traineeship will give you the support, skills and qualifications you need to progress into employment, an Apprenticeship or to go into learning at a higher level. Also, the learning development undertaken will look impressive to employers.
