 Football Academy Match Report

October 16th 2013 – Pembrokeshire College – 5  Merthyr College – 1

Valero sponsored Pembrokeshire College made a belated start to the new season and embarked on their first league game with relish. The competition for places in the squad and starting 11 was very healthy and is testament to the quality of boys coming through in this age group. Playing with the wind in the first half, the Pembs boys started off strong with some good early passing patterns and as early as three minutes into the game, Liam Fawcett saw his low shot go just inches wide of the post and past the despairing Merthyr keeper after a good move involving Laurie Haworth and Dan Harding. Marco Valentine saw his shot bounce off the bar two minutes later and Haworth, with the open goal gaping, fired his shot high. A simple call of ‘time’ from his team mates would have eased his composure no doubt.

Against the run of play it has to be said, Merthyr went one up when a brilliantly struck free kick from the edge of the box flew over the hands of Daniel Evans, on 11 minutes, but five minutes later Pembs were back in it when a superb Valentine cross found Fawcett who fired home. Glen Fiteni forced a brilliant save from the Merthyr keeper just before half time.

The second half started off with all to play for with both teams playing some good football and forcing good saves from the keepers at both ends. Fawcett saw a fine shot saved on the hour and five minutes later he was involved again when his terrific ball into the box found Haworth who hammered home to give Pembs the lead.

Pembs continued with the high press and Declan Escott saw his header go just wide from a free kick. The Pembs pressure really had Merthyr on the back foot despite Merthyr having the wind advantage and on 75 minutes the inspirational Jack Britton played a delightful through ball for Haworth to run on to and make a clinical strike into the corner of the net. Pembs made it 4-1 a few minutes later when Fawcett made a strong wide run from the halfway line, evaded tackles and got in a brilliant cross for Haworth to complete his hat trick with a superb one-touch finish. Britton made it 5-1 with a penalty after Dylan Davies was brought down in the box to complete a fine performance from Pembrokeshire College and set them up for what promises to be a fruitful season.

Pembrokeshire College are indebted to their main sponsors Valero and are very grateful to Clarbeston Road AFC for hosting this game at the last minute due to the Bridge Meadow pitch being unplayable and also to the match officials, Helmut Reinhardt, Colin Newberry and Marcus Sutton.
