During this course you will develop skills in styling men‘s and women‘s hair, colouring and dressing hair, as well as learning skills for the wider beauty industry such as nail art, hand care and presenting a professional image in the salon.

Is this course right for me?

An introduction to Beauty, this course is a blend of theory and practical skills – from customer service to basic beauty treatments. All skills developed will provide the fundamentals to working in the beauty sector and many are transferrable to other sectors such as hairdressing or retail. Throughout the course you will be encouraged to develop your imagination and creativity to start achieving unique looks.

You will need good interpersonal skills, personal presentation and communication skills.

The course will take place in classrooms and The Salons at the College which recreate a workplace environment.

Beauty Courses Guide

  • Two GCSEs at grade D or above (may include one relevant equivalent) to include English Language/First Language Welsh
  • Good personal presentation and communication skills are required
  • Each application is considered on individual merit
  • Entry is subject to an informal interview
  • Successful completion of current/relevant programme (including skills) and decision from progression board meeting

You will study and develop beauty skills and knowledge in nail painting, make-up and skin care.

Units include:

  • Manicure/pedicures and nail art application
  • Make-up application, photographic make-up and themed face painting
  • Skin care
  • Create a hair and beauty image
  • Salon reception and working with others

The course also embeds fundamental skills in communication, team work, health and safety in the workplace, client relations, business awareness and customer service to prepare you for the next level, whether that is entering the workplace or progressing to Level 2.

The College and teaching team provide a supportive environment to help develop your personal confidence as well as promoting healthy living and environmental awareness.

There will be a focus on literacy and numeracy together with developing your knowledge of sustainable issues, citizenship, bilingualism, enterprise and Welsh culture.

You will be required to attend weekly tutorials and complete work experience as part of this programme. You are expected to present a professional image at all times, in the required uniform and follow health and safety measures whilst in the salon environment.

Learners are able to complete either the full qualification or certain units or elements through the medium of Welsh/bilingually.

  • Continuous assessment during the course
  • Practical examination

Successful completion of this course could lead to Level 2 Beauty Therapy and future careers include therapy/spa assistant or salon/spa receptionist.

Following successful completion of this course learners could look to progress to a higher level course at the College, seek an appropriate Apprenticeship or go directly into employment.

  • Text books - you will be told about any specific items before you start the course, most text books are available to loan from the college library or online libraries
  • Beauty Therapy kit - this includes the basics you will need during the course and into the future - £108
  • Make-up and brush kit - £165
  • Additional make-up - you will be told about any specific items during or before you start the course
  • Facial kit - £42
