Is this course right for me?

This is an exciting new programme that is a combination of two complimentary courses.

The world of business and tourism is rapidly changing. You will learn about business enterprise, the functional areas of business, as well as financial awareness, how to complete market research, and marketing a business.  This course will support you with the development of your academic skills, and the development of your transferrable skills that are desired by employers globally including: team working, use of initiative to solve business problems, communication and teamwork.

Through a range of assessment activities and one exam, you will investigate businesses on a local, national and international scope, learning what the business world is all about.

This one-year course takes place over four days per week in college throughout the academic year. 

In addition to this, you will have the opportunity to undertake work experience in the business world. As part of the course, you will be required to complete at least 45 hours of work experience during the period of February to May during your study day.

Practical activities are an important feature of the course and students will be encouraged to participate in visits to industry when appropriate, which will incorporate the study of locally/nationally run businesses (the cost of these trips is not included in the cost of the course).

  • Three GCSEs at grade D or above (may include one relevant equivalent) to include English Language/First Language Welsh and Mathematics/Numeracy
  • Each application is considered on individual merit
  • Entry is subject to attending a course information session or informal interview
  • Successful completion of relevant Level 1 programme (including skills) and decision from progression board meeting
  • GCSE English Language/First Language Welsh at grade D or above
  • GCSE Mathematics/Numeracy at grade D or above
  • or evidence of improvement from internal GCSE/s

The focus is on the development of technical, practical and transferable work-related skills and business specific knowledge. This course investigates the functional areas of business. It will provide you with a broad base of knowledge relating to different types of business on a local, national and global scale. Units included:

Units to be studied include:

  • Introduction to Business: This unit introduces you to the language and terminology used in business. You will explore different types of business ownership and how they relate to the size and scale of a business. You will also explore how the type of ownership impacts on the responsibilities of the owners of a business. By combining all this with looking at different types of business model, you will begin to understand how diverse the world of business is.
  • Finance for Business: You will explore the types of costs that businesses incur, from the initial start-up costs involved in setting up a business to the ongoing daily costs of running the business. You will then explore the ways in which the sale of products and services generates revenue, so that you can develop your understanding of profit.
  • Customer Service: You will understand the importance of meeting customer needs and different types of facilities and services. You will demonstrate customer service skills and how to deal with challenging situations.
  • Organising an Event: In this unit you will explore different types of events and the importance of events and conferences to the UK economy. They will also take part in organising an event and review their contribution.
  • Promoting a Brand: In this unit, you will find out what it takes to build a brand and what a business has to consider when planning brand development. You will investigate the importance of branding to a business, the types of branding that are available and why businesses need to review and update their brands. 
  • Enterprise in the Business World: You will explore business enterprise ideas including the trends that affect them and the factors that influence their success.
  • Work Experience: You will prepare for and undertake a work experience placement. You will, for further development, review their own performance and produce an action plan.
  • The UK Travel and Tourism Industry: In this unit you will understand the structure of the UK travel and tourism industry as well as the different types of organisations. You will understand the factors in the development of the UK travel and tourism industry and relevant job opportunities in the sector.

There will be a focus on the development of literacy and numeracy skills, including GCSE resits. You will also be required to attend tutorials.

This course is designed to give you a solid foundation in the principles of business and tourism to allow you to progress to higher level study. This course will support your progression onto Level 3 Business or Level 3 Travel and Tourism which can lead onto university study or into an exciting career in the business world with a diverse range of career opportunities in a varied range of businesses including:

  • Administration 
  • Law 
  • Business start-up 
  • Customer service

  • Events management.
