VTCT Level 1 Diploma in Hairdressing
During this course you will develop skills in styling men‘s and women‘s hair, colouring and dressing hair, as well as learning skills for the wider beauty industry.

Is this course right for me?
An introduction to hairdressing; this course is a blend of theory and practical skills – from customer service to basic cutting and colouring. All skills developed will provide the fundamentals to working in the hair sector and many are transferrable for other sectors such as beauty or retail. Throughout the course you will be encouraged to develop your imagination and creativity to start achieving unique looks.
The course will take place in classrooms and The Salons at Pembrokeshire College which recreate a workplace environment.
Please note that learners are not allowed to wear facial piercings on this course.

- Two GCSEs at grade D or above (may include one relevant equivalent) to include English Language/First Language Welsh
- Good personal presentation and communication skills are required
- Each application is considered on individual merit
- Entry is subject to an informal interview
- Successful completion of current/relevant programme (including skills) and decision from progression board meeting

You will study and develop hairdressing skills such as; shampoo and conditioning, styling women’s hair, basic cutting and assisting with colour and perming services.
Units include:
- Dressing hair
- Plaiting and twisting
- Colouring hair with temporary colour
- Shampoo and conditioning
- Styling women/men’s hair
- Salon reception and working with others
The course also embeds fundamental skills in communication, team work, health and safety in the workplace, client relations, business awareness and customer service to prepare you for the next level, whether that is entering the workplace or on to a Level 2 course.
The College and teaching team provide a supportive environment to help develop your personal confidence as well as promoting healthy living and environmental awareness.
There will be a focus on literacy and numeracy skills together with developing your knowledge of sustainable issues, citizenship, bilingualism, enterprise and Welsh culture.
You will be required to attend weekly tutorials and complete work experience as part of the programme. You are expected to present a professional image at all times, in the required uniform and follow health and safety measures whilst in the salon environment.
Learners are able to complete either the full qualification or certain units or elements through the medium of Welsh/bilingually.

- Practical examination
Successful completion of this course can lead to progression to Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy or Complementary Therapies. Alternatively, learners could choose to follow a work-based route or an apprenticeship pathway.
- Text books - you will be told about any specific items before you start the course, most text books are available to loan from the college library or online libraries
- You will need to provide your own device/laptop for parts of this course, click here to find out more
