Level 1 Diploma for Entry to the Uniformed Services

This course is suitable for young people wishing to pursue a career in the British Armed Forces, whether that be British Army, Royal Air Force or Royal Navy, including Royal Marines. The course engages young people in learning and gives them the skills and preparation needed to progress to the Armed Forces or to further education.

Is this course right for me?

As part of this course we will begin to build your fitness levels, your confidence, personal administration, self-discipline and work on your teambuilding and communication skills. In addition to this, you have the opportunity to gain formal qualifications including Level 1 Certificate in Protective Services, Level 2 Award in Nutrition, Sports Leaders Award and Emergency First Aid.

  • One GCSE at grade D or above to include English Language/First Language Welsh or Mathematics/Numeracy
  • Should demonstrate a keen interest in physical activity and be physically fit
  • Each application is considered on individual merit
  • Entry is subject to attending a course information session or informal interview
  • Successful completion of relevant programme (including skills) and decision from progression board meeting

You will study the following units:

  • Physical training to prepare applicants to pass recruit selection and basic training
  • Field craft including patrolling, ‘basha’ building, improvised shelters
  • Foot drill
  • Ironing military uniform and polishing boots
  • Map reading
  • Command tasks – to develop team work
  • Literacy and numeracy
  • Military history and military knowledge
  • Relevant visits to military training establishments and from military personnel
  • Mock recruit selections to practice and assess skills
  • Organisational skills
  • Developing a personal progression plan related to your career choice
  • Taking part in fitness tests
  • Planning and navigating a route
  • Community work
  • Sports Leaders
  • First Aid

Learners are able to complete either the full qualification or certain units or elements through the medium of Welsh/bilingually. Visit our Welsh Language in the College page to find out what else is available to you.

On successful completion of this course learners may progress to a Level 2 Uniformed Protective Services course or pursue a military career.

This course has an outstanding track record of preparing young people to successfully pass recruit selection and gain entry into a vast range of career opportunities with the British Armed Forces including the British Army, Royal Air Force, Royal Navy and Royal Marines.

Former learners have successfully progressed from this course to a diverse range of military careers including Parachute Regiment, Intelligence Corps, Royal Engineers, Royal Marines, RAF Regiment, Royal Logistics Corps, Royal Artillery and Royal Corps of Signals to name but a few. A couple of previous students have even achieved the rare accolade of Special Forces.
