The course is useful in both a professional and personal setting. It will enhance the understanding of those already working therapeutically eg. support workers, counsellors, key workers and those working in a help and support setting and also benefit parents and carers through increased knowledge and awareness.

This eight week course normally runs on a Thursday, 18:00 – 20:00.
- No formal entry requirements
- Each application is considered on individual merit
- Learners must be at least 16 years old
Topics to be covered include:
- Define the terms substance and substance misuse
- Describe categories of substances and their effects
- Describe categories of substance users
- Describe current legislation relating to substance misuse
- Understand the effects of substance misuse
- Give examples of why people misuse substances
- Describe the effects of substance misuse
Learners are able to complete either the full qualification or certain units or elements through the medium of Welsh/bilingually.
- Continuous assessment during the course
- Portfolio of evidence
This qualification does not lead directly to an employed role. However, the knowledge gained contributes towards a specialist area of counselling and would be useful in a variety of settings, both professional, paraprofessional and personal, for example:
- Supporting those working in Tier 1 services by providing an overview of the subject
- Enhancing understanding of those already working therapeutically e.g. counsellors, support workers, key workers
- Benefiting parents and carers by virtue of increased knowledge and awareness
- Helping and supporting others either in a voluntary or employed capacity
