The opportunities in the marine sector are huge with the government announcing in March that it would be doubling its support of £30 million a year for SMarT cadetships. Multi-national shipping companies including Carnival UK, BP, Shell, Maersk and Stena Line have also pledged to create extra training posts.
Not all opportunities are away from home. Pembrokeshire’s unique location boasts many marine opportunities, from boat-building with Dale Sailing and Mainstay Marine, marine support services with Svitzer (part of the Mearsk group) and port operations with the Milford Haven Port Authority; not forgetting an abundance of marine engineering businesses that are now diversifying into marine tourism. For those looking to work further afield the opportunities are even greater. On deck or below and even port operations, all represent huge earning potential, and worldwide travel.
Enrolling on a BTEC Engineering Diploma or A-levels at Pembrokeshire College is the first step and can lead to many marine opportunities including: apprenticeships, Royal Navy accelerated engineering apprenticeships, merchant navy cadetships and entry to university or even the Warsash Maritime Academy – the world’s leading maritime education and training provider.
The marine sector offers attractive salaries and the opportunity for worldwide travel depending on the route you take. If you are interested in finding out more we will be holding a DESTINATION: MARINE event at Pembrokeshire College on Monday 18 June, 4.30pm – 6.30pm where you can meet some of the professionals already working in the field and uncover the next steps to a career in this exciting field.
