A total of 130 learners and 22 local businesses have benefited from attending three Employer Lunches during academic year 2018/2019. Sponsored by Dragon LNG, and organised through Pembrokeshire College’s Employment Bureau, each lunch focused on sectors from IT and Business, and Engineering and Construction through to Catering, Hospitality and Complementary Therapy.

Representatives from organisations were invited to a lunch in the College’s student-run restaurant which gave them the chance to meet with learners to discuss the employment-related opportunities available. Employer feedback taken on the day was really positive and included: “Fantastic day. Engaged students and hosts. The format of the session was the best that I have been involved with.” – BTG International and “I must say that I was impressed with the students that I met.” – Ascona.

As a direct result of the IT and Business Employer Lunch in November 2018, four learners attended job interviews and one completed a work placement. The event also resulted in three apprenticeships being offered. Following the Engineering and Construction Employer Lunch in February 2019, two learners attended job interviews, eight learners undertook work placements, one learner completed a work trial and two learners gained employment. The Catering, Hospitality and Complementary Therapy Employer Lunch, held in May 2019, helped 26 learners to obtain work experience placements and two learners secured employment.

So far, six job interviews, 35 work placements, one work trial, four job starts and three apprenticeships have been facilitated as a result of the employer lunches with outcomes still pending from various recruitment drives. The Employment Bureau, a learner recruitment service based in Pembrokeshire College and part funded by the Welsh Government, continues to help businesses with their recruitment needs. The team help College learners with CV writing, interview skills, finding work experience placements and job searching.
