Design project gives students food for thought
As Fishguard’s Transition Community Café goes from strength to strength, students on the interactive media course at Pembrokeshire College were called upon to develop an overarching design theme for the café as it approached its first birthday.
With various materials already in place for the Café, Tracy Whistance, Projects Development Officer funded by Environment Wales, and Chris Samra, director of Transition Bro Gwaun, approached the College to see if students would be interested in developing an overall ‘look’ for the café moving forward.
As always, the students leapt at the chance to work on a real design brief and presented the café with myriad of designs to choose from.
As would be expected with a community café, all the designs were put to the management board and customers were asked to vote for their favourite with Dafydd Emlyn Davies, aged 17 from Cardigan, being chosen as the overall winner.
After working with the College Tracy commented: “I was really impressed with all the designs and would have been happy with any one of them. I have been really impressed with the talent pool that exists at the College and the professionalism of the students. It is great to see the design in use around the café.”
Dafydd’s designs formed part of the display that Transition Bro Gwaun took to the Hay Festival of Literature and the Arts which saw the community café secure a further £10,000 of funding when it won the Future Dragon Den Award.
First year student Dafydd commented: “I’m really enjoying the interactive media course. So far I have worked on three live design briefs giving me real experience of what it would be like to work in the industry. For this project, I took elements of the existing logo to build a bigger brand for the café utilising a dark green to reflect the eco-friendly nature of the business.”
