It’s widely known that how children engage with learning during their early years plays an important role in determining their future. By choosing to study a course in childcare, you can be a part of that future.

Is this course right for me?

The course is designed to equip you with a wide range of knowledge which will be needed to gain employment working with young children in a variety of settings. During the course you will learn about the growth and development of children and will need an ability to relate to children.

  • Two GCSEs at grade D or above (may include one relevant equivalent) to include English Language/First Language Welsh
  • Entry is subject to an enhanced DBS check
  • Each application is considered on individual merit
  • Entry is subject to attending a course information session or informal interview
  • Successful completion of relevant programme (including skills) and decision from progression board meeting
  • Entry is subject to an enhanced DBS check

As part of this course you will study the following units:

  • Introduction to the childcare sector
  • Overcoming barriers at work
  • Understanding development and wellbeing of children
  • Developing digital and online skills
  • Valuing diversity at work
  • Introduction to appropriate workplace behaviour
  • Working as part of a team
  • Introduction to health and safety in the workplace
  • Understand principles and values
  • Understanding safeguarding children at risk

As part of this course you will also study a VTCT Level 1 Award in Mental Health Awareness and complete Tier 1 Safeguarding.

You may need to study an additional skills course depending on:
  • the course you are taking at College
  • what grades you gained in your GCSE Maths and/or English Language

Learners are able to complete either the full qualification or certain units or elements through the medium of Welsh/bilingually. Visit our Welsh Language in the College page to find out what else is available to you.

Successful completion of this course could lead to a number of future career opportunities including: Assistant Play Worker, Childminder, Nursery Assistant, Classroom Assistant, Out of School Care Worker, Learning Support Assistant, Special Needs Assistant.

Following successful completion of this course learners could look to progress to a higher level course at the College, seek an appropriate Apprenticeship or go directly into employment.
