Is this course right for me?

This one year hands-on course gives learners a foundation understanding of working in engineering, including; safe working practices, working within different sectors of engineering alongside engineering terminology used.

The practical units entail learners fitting using hand skills, this means using files, vernier height gauges and marking out equipment to produce products. Maintaining mechanical components, including inboard and outboard marine engines alongside typical engineering plant that require a service schedule. Learners will also use lathe to produce engineering components and working to a tolerance.

  • Two GCSEs at grade G or above (may include one relevant equivalent) to include English Language/English Literature/First Language Welsh and Mathematics/Numeracy
  • Essential Skills Wales (ESW) in Application of Number and Communication may be an acceptable equivalent to GCSEs
  • Each application is considered on individual merit
  • Entry is subject to attending a course information session or informal interview
  • Successful completion of relevant programme (including skills) and decision from progression board meeting

As part of this course, you will study a range of introductory units which are related to mechanical engineering for progression into the engineering construction industry including:

  • Working in engineering – This unit will encourage candidates to find out about t working in engineering. It covers the basic skills and knowledge needed to enter engineering or manufacturing sectors. This will cover the need to recognise and use safe working practices, consideration of the environment and working effectively as a part of a team. It includes the basic materials that engineers use in their everyday work as well as the information technology that is used.
  • Carrying out basic fitting techniques – This unit will introduce candidates to the safe use of hand tools and fitting activities that are required in the engineering and manufacturing sectors. It covers the basic skills and knowledge needed to produce components for assembly using appropriate tools, materials and checking techniques to achieve the required sizes and specifications, whilst complying with health and safety legislation and regulations.
  • Carrying out basic turning techniques – This unit is concerned with the underlying process in setting and operating a centre lathe, following safe working practices and checking simple components for size. The candidate will be able select the required Personal Protective Equipment and state the requirements for safe operation of the equipment. They will be able to select the appropriate speeds and tools to achieve the desired outcome and be able to recognise and use the appropriate items of measuring equipment to achieve the desired outcome.

If you do not currently hold qualifications in GCSE Maths and English, you may be required to undertake the following:

  • Essential Skills Wales (ESW) – Communication Skills
  • Essential Skills Wales (ESW) – Application of Number Skills
You may need to study an additional skills course depending on:
  • the course you are taking at College
  • what grades you gained in your GCSE Maths and/or English Language

Learners are able to complete either the full qualification or certain units or elements through the medium of Welsh/bilingually. Visit our Welsh Language in the College page to find out what else is available to you.

  • Continuous assessment during the course
  • Portfolio of evidence
  • Practical examination
  • Online examination

This course can lead onto a Level 2 Mechanical Engineering or Level 2 Marine Engineering course.

Following successful completion of this course learners could look to progress to a higher level course at the College, seek an appropriate Apprenticeship or go directly into employment.
