Do you dream about becoming cabin crew, a hotel manager, or a resort rep? Have you dreamed about working in guest relations, on a cruise ship, or even managing a large event? Then this course is right for you! This course will act as a stepping-stone on your journey to your desired destination.

Is this course right for me?

The tourism industry is one of the fastest growing industries around the world.  This course will teach you about the UK travel and tourism industry, look at a variety of different destinations globally, and learn about industry specific promotions. We will support you with the development of your academic skills, and the development of your transferrable skills that are desired by employers globally.

Through a range of assessments, you will find out about local, national and international destinations, and investigate what the business and tourism industry is about.

This one-year course normally takes place over four days per week in college throughout the academic year. 

In addition to this, you will have the opportunity to undertake work experience in the tourism industry. As part of the course, you will be required to complete at least 45 hours of work experience during the period of February to May during your study day.

Practical activities are an important feature of the course and students will be encouraged to participate in visits to industry when appropriate, which will incorporate the study of locally/nationally run businesses (the cost of these trips is not included in the cost of the course).

  • Three GCSEs at grade D or above (may include one relevant equivalent) to include English Language/First Language Welsh
  • Good personal presentation and communication skills are required
  • Each application is considered on individual merit
  • Entry is subject to attending a course information session or informal interview
  • Successful completion of relevant Level 1 programme with a merit grade or above in addition to a successful decision from progression board meeting
  • GCSE English Language/First Language Welsh at grade D or above
  • or evidence of improvement from internal GCSE/s

The qualification combines theoretical knowledge with the practical skills needed to work within the sector.

Units to be studied to include:

  • Customer Service: You will understand the importance of meeting customer needs and different types of facilities and services. You will demonstrate customer service skills and how to deal with challenging situations.
  • The UK Travel and Tourism Industry: You will understand the structure of the UK travel and tourism industry as well as the different types of organisations. You will understand the factors in the development of the UK travel and tourism industry and relevant job opportunities in the sector.
  • Destinations: You will understand travel and tourism destinations in the UK and worldwide and understand what attracts tourists to destinations.
  • Promotion in Travel & Tourism: You will understand factors influencing promotional activity in travel and tourism, create promotional material for travel and tourism, and review promotional material produced.
  • Hospitality: You will understand how different hospitality providers offer different products and services, understand the role of different types of hospitality customer service staff, and understand customer services skills required in hospitality.
  • Organising an Event: You will explore different types of events and the importance of events and conferences to the UK economy. You will also take part in organising an event and review your contribution.
  • Work Experience: You will prepare for, and undertake a work experience placement. You will, for further development, review their own performance and produce an action plan.
  • Specialist Tourism: You will understand aspects of specialist tourism such as volunteer, adventure, sporting, dark, and medical. You will then research suitable tourism destinations.

There will be a focus on literacy and numeracy skills together with developing your knowledge of sustainable issues, citizenship, bilingualism, enterprise and Welsh culture. Learners will also be required to attend tutorials.

This course is designed to give you a solid foundation in the principles of travel and tourism to allow you to progress onto Level 3 Travel and Tourism which can lead onto university study or into an exciting career in the travel and tourism industry.

Following successful completion of this course learners could look to progress to a higher level course at the College, seek an appropriate Apprenticeship or go directly into employment.
