WJEC A-level Chemistry
We are surrounded by chemistry all day, every day. From the clothes we wear, to the food we eat and the vehicles we travel in, chemistry is an integral part of our lives.
Is this course right for me?
This course will provide you with a broad introduction to the three main areas of Chemistry (Organic, Inorganic and Physical) as well as covering the key concepts of Chemistry such as structures of compounds and how and why they react.
- Five GCSEs at grade C or above (may include one relevant equivalent) to include English Language/First Language Welsh and Mathematics/Numeracy
- Chemistry grade B (plus another Science at grade B) or Science grade BB and Maths grade B

- Each application is considered on individual merit
- Entry is subject to attending a course information session or informal interview
- Successful completion of relevant programme (including skills) and decision from progression board meeting
Over the two years you will develop your practical skills including planning and carrying out your own experiments. You will need a genuine interest in Chemistry and will be expected to complete a significant amount of private study over the two years.
Units to be studies include:
- The language of chemistry, structure of matter and simple reactions
- Energy, rate and chemistry of carbon compounds
- Physical and inorganic chemistry
- Organic chemistry and analysis
- Practical

- what grades you gained in your GCSE Maths and/or English Language

This course can lead to a diverse range of career opportunities in a varied range of businesses including: Academic researcher, Analytical chemist, Biotechnologist, Chemical engineer, Clinical scientist (biochemistry), Forensic scientist, Nanotechnologist, Pharmacologist, Research scientist (physical sciences), Scientific laboratory technician, Toxicologist.
