Year 1 modules (Level 4)
Academic and Employability Skills
To provide students with the essential knowledge and techniques that explain, underpin and enhance the requisite skills needed for success in an academic environment, while supporting transferable, sustainable, lifelong learning. In addition students will be equipped with practical and logical problem-solving skills essential in typical laboratory or workshop environments.
Computer Architecture and Networks
This module will provide the student with an understanding of the key concepts and building blocks of computer systems and also clarifies the issues associated with network use and how this has developed. It will identify the architectural concepts behind networking and help develop the preliminary skills necessary to install and manage networks.
Data Analysis and Visualisation
To develop the knowledge and skills required to perform basic statistical analysis of experimental data and introduce a wide variety of techniques used to display different types of data effectively. The students will learn to design data presentations for both static and interactive displays.
To introduce students to the underlying concepts of systems analysis and design of computer-based systems with an emphasis on requirements analysis, continuing through to the analysis of data. Database design techniques are studied and used to translate theoretical skill into practical applications.
Internet Technology and Security
To provide students with an understanding of the underlying concepts and principles necessary for the implementation of web technologies including the analysis of the security of an Internet/intranet system with regard to internal and external threats.
To introduce students to software constructs and to development of software using a high level programming language. Simple design concepts and good programming practice will be adopted.
Year 2 Modules (Level 5)
Advanced Software Development
To provide students with a conceptual understanding of abstract data types, data structures and algorithms used in computer science and software engineering and the ability to apply these concepts using object oriented (OO) development methods.
To provide students with a systematic understanding of the concepts underlying the implementation of interactive web, games, desktop or mobile experiences.
Business and Web Management
To enable students to gain a broad understanding of Business and IT Management concepts, techniques and methods used within organisations today including the role of the contemporary manager in the realisation of individual and organisational potential through stakeholder relationships. Students will also develop their conceptual understanding and practical skills in using up-to-date technologies to meet business needs including areas such as information systems, online marketing and e-commerce.
Database Management Systems
To provide students with the essential concepts involved in the design, implementation, and testing of multi-user database applications. It will also expose students to some of the more advanced concepts that underpin multi-user access and more sophisticated database applications.
Enterprise and Innovation Group Project
The module develops the student’s innovation, entrepreneurship and employability skills by enabling them to work in teams to apply and develop their skills and knowledge to create an innovative prototype, new product business plan and professional pitch presentation.
Project Management and Research Methods
To provide students with a critical awareness of the contemporary challenges facing IT managers and the key decisions they must take in order to satisfy the principal stakeholders to create quality systems within the promised timescale and budget. The student will appreciate the importance of professional conduct and the ethical and legal issues facing IT personnel. This module underpins academic research and provides students with a comprehensive and systematic understanding of the knowledge and skills needed to collect, interpret, analyse, synthesise and present data using appropriate research methods.
