WJEC A-level Drama and Theatre

A-level Drama is an exciting exploration of drama and theatre. The course has a strong focus on practical dramatic skills as well as textual analysis and gives learners a well rounded insight into what it takes to be a professional actor.

Is this course right for me?

The course will help to develop your teamwork, communication and critical analysis skills as you work as part of a team to create performances based on text and stimuli, using the ideas and techniques of theatrical practitioners. Please note that although you will be performing in groups each student is graded individually.

Facilities you will have access to include: The Merlin Theatre (a 240 seat black box venue, equipped with industry standard digital sound and lighting control), two drama studios, set and props construction workshop, costume store and sewing room.

  • Five GCSEs at grade C or above (may include one relevant equivalent) to include English Language/First Language Welsh and Mathematics/Numeracy
  • Drama grade B (or equivalent) and English Language/Literature/First Language Welsh grade B

  • Each application is considered on individual merit
  • Entry is subject to attending a course information session or informal interview
  • Successful completion of relevant programme (including skills) and decision from progression board meeting

During the course you will develop your ability to study and analyse plays from multiple perspectives including those of the performer, the designer and the director.

Units to be studied will include:

  • Theatre workshop
  • Text in theatre
  • Text in action
  • Text in performance

You will be required to attend weekly tutorials.
