A-level Fine Art

This course is intended for those who wish to explore the potential of drawing and painting through observed study. This can be an exhilarating and fast paced experience but it takes a committed attitude to learning and a trust in your lecturers’ advice.

Is this course right for me?

The Fine Art A-level is delivered by two experienced Art and Design lecturers who are both practitioners. The philosophy of this study is an emphasis on ‘observation’ of the subject, learning to look and understand what is being seen. How this can be translated through the expressive nature of materials and individual investigation of the subject.

  • Five GCSEs at grade C or above (may include one relevant equivalent) to include English Language/First Language Welsh and Mathematics/Numeracy
  • Art grade B (or suitable portfolio of work)
  • Please check the AS Level Options Grid to see if this subject fits into your chosen programme
  • A portfolio/examples of work will be required for this course
  • Each application is considered on individual merit
  • Entry is subject to attending a course information session or informal interview
  • Successful completion of relevant programme (including skills) and decision from progression board meeting

As part of this course you will study and analyse the work of other artists and use this knowledge to enhance and influence your own work. This forms a large proportion of the assessment structure.

Units to be studied will include:

  • Find out what drawing and painting is and what it can be
  • What is good observational study
  • Working in the studio
  • Use of formal elements – line, tone, colour, mark
  • Use of variety of media and techniques
  • Understanding of contextual study
  • Discussion and evaluation of outcomes through critique
  • Expressing ideas and exploring subjects visually
  • Investigating a subject through series
  • Moving from A4 to A1 quickly and with purpose

Learners also complete the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales and are required to develop their essential skills (communication/numeracy and digital skills). Learners will also attend a weekly group tutorial.

This course can lead to a diverse range of career opportunities in a varied range of businesses including: Advertising art director, Art therapist, Commercial art gallery manager, Community arts worker, Conservator, Exhibition designer, Fine artist, Graphic designer, Illustrator, Museum/gallery exhibitions officer, Printmaker, Secondary school teacher.
