The qualification covers a wide range of engineering disciplines related to the Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering sector. It enables you to demonstrate your occupational competence through the development of hand-skills and gaining of knowledge. The qualification is for learners who have some knowledge and basic skills in production or maintenance engineering to enable them to progress safely into the workplace/employment or who want increase their skills and progress onto more advanced qualifications in the engineering sector. Although a work-based competence qualification you can be assesssed in a ‘sheltered’ environment such as a College of Further Education. The qualification can also form part of an apprenticeship framework.

This qualification could lead successful learners into roles such as:
- Manual metal arc welder
- Aircraft systems fitter
- Maintenance Engineer
- Electronics Operator
- Sheet metalworker
The qualification could also lead to an advanced apprenticeship in Engineering or other Level
3 engineering related qualifications.
You have option of selecting one of two pathways, Engineering Practices or Technical Support.
For each pathway you must complete the following mandatory units:
- Working safely in an engineering environment
- Carrying out engineering activities efficiently and effectively
- Using and communicating technical information
For the ‘Engineering Practices’ pathway you must then select a minimum of three optional units covering a wide range of engineering disciplines which include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Producing components using hand fitting techniques
- Producing aircraft detail assemblies
- Preparing and using milling machines
- Preparing and using manual metal arc welding equipment
- Maintaining mechanical devices and equipment
For the ‘Technical Support’ pathway you must select a minimum of give optional units covering a range of engineering disciplines which include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Producing CAD Models (Drawings) using a CAD System
- Conducting Business Improvement Activities
- General Maintenance Engineering Applications
COURSE ASSESSMENT / EXAMINATION:
The majority of assessment for this competence-based qualification will take place in the workplace under real work conditions, using observations by a qualified assessor and/or testimony from an Expert Witness and work products. All the identified assessment criteria must be evidenced and a holistic approach to
assessment is encouraged. Your allocated assessor will visit you in your work place to access your skills on a monthly basis.
There is no prior knowledge, attainment or experience required for this qualification. Existing workers are expected to be competent by virtue of their length of service and experience and satisfactory performance in their roles, and will need to achieve the qualification in order to have this competence validated.
It is the responsibility of the employer and the assessor to ensure that candidates have the skills, potential and opportunity to gain the qualifications successfully.
There are no age requirements for candidates undertaking the qualifications unless this is a legal requirement of the process or the environment in which they operate. However, it is not expected that candidates for these qualifications would be younger than 16.
