Is this course right for me?

This eight month work-based qualification is aimed at learners who are working, or want to work, in a wide range of hospitality and catering businesses, for example fine dining or casual dining restaurants, hotels, contract caterers, armed forces, schools and care homes.

  • No formal entry requirements
  • You will be expected to be in relevant job role
  • Each application is considered on individual merit
  • Entry is subject to attending a course information session or informal interview
  • Learners must be at least 16 years old

This comprises of mandatory units and a range of optional units.

Mandatory units to be studied include:

  • Maintenance of a safe, hygienic and secure working environment
  • Working effectively as part of a hospitality team
  • Maintain food safety when storing, preparing and cooking food
  • Maintain, handle and clean knives

Choose from a variety of units available from the optional groups to make up the remaining credits for the qualification.

If you do not currently hold qualifications in GCSE Maths and English, you may be required to undertake the following:

  • Essential Skills Wales (ESW) – Communication Skills
  • Essential Skills Wales (ESW) – Application of Number Skills

Learners are able to complete either the full qualification or certain units or elements through the medium of Welsh/bilingually. Visit our Welsh Language in the College page to find out what else is available to you.

  • Practical assessment during the course
  • Portfolio of evidence
  • Workplace evidence
  • Written examination

Successful completion of this course could lead to employment as a Chef, Commis Chef or Craft Chef.

Following successful completion of this course learners could look to progress to a higher level course at the College, seek an appropriate Apprenticeship or go directly into employment.
