First year Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport students put their theory into practise by coaching Year 2 children from The Meads CP Infants and Nursery School in Milford Haven. The students coached over 90 children over three weeks. Pupils, aged between six and seven, participated in two 45-minute sessions following the Elevating Athletics coaching pathway, which is aimed at developing the children’s ability to run and jump with good technique. The coaching activities are to help with the promotion of lifelong participation in sport and exercise.
Four sessions ran simultaneously in the sports hall utilising one badminton court per group. Students developed the ability to demonstrate and verbally communicate coaching points. “For many this was their first experience of coaching young individuals. The children left the hall each week with smiles on their faces and the students feeling very proud of their achievements,” said lecturer Andrew Thomas.
