Last week Pembrokeshire College was proud host to the National Chef of Wales 2013 regional heats.
Organised by the Welsh Culinary Association (WCA), this prestigious competition showcases the exceptional culinary talent of some of Wales’ best chefs and provides them with a platform for gaining official recognition for their skills.
The competition runs on a bi-annual basis and is sponsored by the Welsh Government. This year just four chefs were selected to compete in the south region heats.
After three intense hours in the kitchen Mike Bates, Executive Chef at Celtic Manor and Chef Patron at White Hart Village Inn, Llangybi, was named as the south regional winner with a menu of Mackerel and Razor Clams, Organic Roast Chicken, and Apple and Ginger Sponge Pudding.
Mike will now go forward to compete in the final to be held on 24 February 2014 where he will be competing against four other chefs in their bid to take home the title of Welsh International Culinary Champion.
During the final each of the chefs will need to pull out all the stops when they will be tasked with creating and cooking a four-course dinner for four people in just three hours from a mystery box of ingredients presented to them the night before the competition.
Following the competition the winner will be announced at an awards dinner where the winning chef will be presented with a bespoke dragon trophy and £2,000 in prize money.
