Many apps today are designed to engage with young people, therefore setting a conceptual app competition proved to be an exciting challenge for Pembrokeshire College’s students.
The Centre of Excellence for Mobile Applications and Services (CEMAS), a European funded project that was established by the University of Glamorgan set the brief. Students were asked to come up with an idea for a brand new mobile application – and develop a business plan to take it to market. The competition winner would be supported by the University and Pembrokeshire County Council to help set up a limited company to launch the app. The judges were Martin Spicer and Ellian Rodrick from University of Glamorgan and Wendy Harries, a youth enterprise officer from the Pembrokeshire County Council. “They are the high tech generation and they naturally connect with this world. Advances in science and new technology are vital for the future wellbeing of our society – this is an exciting and relevant competition for tomorrows innovators to enter,” said Wendy.
Eight teams were shortlisted to present to the panel, their ideas ranged from a voice an interesting fact app to a music app displaying a personalised avatar. However, the winning team called Helping Hand, presented a useful app that could appeal to all age groups and was realistic in terms of managing content and its longevity. The concept of the winning app was to provide the user with easy to follow instruction manuals – from everyday DIY to life-saving first aid.
Information and communication technology (ICT) students – Alex Heaven, Catrina Nash, Daniel Horsburgh, John Lagrosas and Toni Stokes were delighted to have won and are all keen to work in partnership with CEMAS in bringing their idea to market. Student Daniel said, “The competition has given some enterprising skills which will become useful in the future”. This is a mass-market app with mass-market appeal that could attract many advertisers, thus potentially turning their concept into a sustainable business for the future.
