Is this course right for me?
This is an introduction to sculpting techniques in clay.
If you’ve always wanted to know how to create a three-dimensional form using clay by exploring a range of building, modelling and carving techniques, then this course will show you how. Working through the fundamental building processes, the sessions will lead you towards creating an individual piece of sculpture that incorporates any themes or ideas that are of interest to you.
No previous experience is necessary just a keen interest in being creative and an openness to exploring new ideas and processes. The course will focus on a range of ‘hand-building’ methods, with the aim to produce a final sculptural piece.
This eight week course runs on a Tuesday or Thursday, 18:00 – 20:00, Pembrokeshire College Main Campus.
This course will be available in 2025/26 academic year. Dates now available to book on and secure a space.

The course aims to cover a range of ‘sculpting’ techniques, covering processes such as pinching, coiling, slab-building, modelling, sculpting, carving, supporting work during the making process and types of suitable clay.
Each session will explore a particular process following a demonstration, which will then allow you to experiment with methods and ideas. Sessions will be structured towards a final sculptural form of your own, which will include developing an idea, gathering references and small scale preliminary experimental models.
The sessions will also cover understanding form and proportion, essential sculpting tools and their uses, planning and designing your sculpture and safe building methods.
The course will provide you with an understanding of various building methods, safe art studio practice and an insight into developing an initial idea, through to a realised outcome.
This eight-week course will not only allow you to develop your practical skills but will also promote your own creativity through making and discussing potential ideas with others.
You will receive a College completion certificate at the end of the course.
