VTCT Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing (6008-03)
This course provides progression from Level 2 and is designed to equip you with advanced skills in cutting, styling and colouring. Throughout the course you will be encouraged to show your creativity and to begin to build your own signature style.
Is this course right for me?
The course builds on your existing skills and aims at preparing you for work in salons.
During the course you will learn advanced skills in styling, cutting and colouring. The course will continue to build your confidence and will give you a solid foundation in the skills required to work in many different settings from the high street to the catwalk to cruise ships. Throughout the course you will be encouraged to show your creativity to create show stopping styles.
This course will also include evening commercial sessions which you will be expected to attend to gain commercial experience. Therefore, you will be required to make your own transport arrangements.
Please note that learners are not allowed to wear facial piercings on this course.
What are the entry requirements?
- There is normally no direct entry to this course, you would need to progress from the successful completion of previous level in this subject area or similar
- You will be expected to be in relevant job role
- Good personal presentation and communication skills are required
- Each application is considered on individual merit
- Entry is subject to attending a course information session or informal interview

- Successful completion of relevant Level 2 programme (including skills) and decision from progression board meeting
What will I learn?
As part of the course you will study the following units:
- Creatively style and dress hair
- Creatively cut hair using a combination of techniques
- Creatively colour and lighten hair
- Provide consultation services
- Develop, enhance and evaluate your creative hairdressing skills
Throughout the course there will be a focus on literacy and numeracy skills together with developing your knowledge of sustainable issues, citizenship, bilingualism, enterprise and Welsh culture. You will also be expected to attend weekly tutorials.
You will be expected to undertake work experience in a salon during the course.
Will I need to study additional English & Maths skills?
- the course you are taking at College
- what grades you gained in your GCSE Maths and/or English Language
If you are studying a construction/trade course (brickwork, carpentry, electrical or plumbing):
- Essential Skills Wales (ESW) in Application of Number and Communications
All other courses:
- Wales Essential Skills Toolkit (WEST) in upskilling / Lessons in Financial Education
- A one year GCSE resit course in required subject/s
- A one or two year pre-GCSE upskilling course
- A one year GCSE START upskilling course
Can I do this course in Welsh?

What can I do next?
Successful completion of this course and progression to a higher level programme could lead to a number of future career opportunities including: Junior Hairdresser, Stylist, Colourist, Barber, Salon Manager, Creative Director.
There is a wide range of opportunities for learners on completion of this course, including work as a stylist in a salon, self-employment, work in TV, theatre, films, and session work with a photographer.

- We are waiving the Administration Fee for the academic year 2025/26
- You will need to pay a £55 hairdressing workshop fee each year before you start the Level 3 course
