Course overview

If you are currently working in the industry and are interested in obtaining formal qualifications for your skills, the NVQ courses provide the skills, training and underpinning knowledge you need to become recognised as a carpenter.


Entry requirements

  • All candidates must be employed or self employed as a Carpenter/Joiner or an apprentice
  • ICA or NVQ level 2
  • Entry is normally subject to interview
  • For mature applicants - Direct admissions to programmes for applicants who have been out of full time education for more than two years will be considered based on previous learning or experience. Each application will be considered on individual merit. We recommend an interview with one of our Careers Advisers before submitting your application.

What you will learn

The course is approximately 60% practical and 40% classroom based.

Students will learn roofing skills, fitting floor joints and covering, doors and frames, kitchen units, stud-work walls, windows, stairs, skirting and architraves. Also health and safety, setting and marking out and site supervisory skills, resource management and programming.
