Key facts
10 week training programme, running Monday to Friday 9.30am to 3.30pm. The course will be held in the College's Milford Haven MITEC centre. The course will start in January 2010, May 2010 and October 2010.
Course overview
This training course will appeal to those interested in boats, engines and working in the marine environment and will suit candidates that are not currently in work, training or education. The course aims to give its students industry relevant qualifications, a boost to their personal prospects and to aid in career choices. Students will also gain sailing experience. As part of the course students will travel to Ireland and it is hoped that there will be a voyage on a Tall Ship.
What you can do after this course
The programme aims to be the first step to employment in the marine industry, boat building, the construction and engineering industry, the Royal Navy or Merchant Navy and the Port Authorities
It is also possible that successful students could go onto further training in boat building, marine engineering, carpentry, general engineering and motor vehicle maintenance.
Entry requirements
No previous qualifications or experience in the marine industry is required for this course but places are limited and there will be a selection interview. Candidates should have an interest in the marine environment, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. Due to the content of the course students should be able to swim, please contact us if you are not able to swim so that appropriate arrangements can be made. An Initial Assessment will be carried out at interview so that appropriate support can be arranged prior to the start of the course.
What you will learn
Students will follow a varied programme including:
Week 1
Induction and team building activities, RYA Level 1 Sailing and RYA level 1 Power Boating
Weeks 2 to 8
OCN Boatbuilding units including Woodwork, GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) and Outboard Engines. RYA qualifications including First Aid, Basic Navigation and VHF Radio. Working with boat builders on the traditional construction of a Tenby Lugger.
Week 9
One week residential in Ireland with our Irish project partners
Week 10
Final team challenge, finishing portfolios, team presentation and taking the next step...
A fundamental part of each programme will be to work with students looking at further training and work options for the future. This will include CV writing, career guidance and various personality profiling techniques to help students understand what careers or courses they might be suited for.
Additional qualifications studied:
This course will boost many personal skills such as building confidence, improving communication skills, responsibility, reliability, timekeeping, pushing personal boundaries, team work and problem solving - all valuable abilities in the workplace.
Things you may need for your course
It will be necessary to wear protective equipment and clothing for many of the activities on the course, this will be provided by the College
Support on the course
Pembrokeshire College will undertake an Initial Assessment with students and will provide support.
Fees
This course is free of charge and students may be eligible to apply for funding to assist their studies. Students aged 16 to 18 may be eligible for Educational Maintenance Allowance and students aged 19 and over may be eligible for Assembly Learning Grant. Application Dates
For the course starting 18th January 2010
Applications must be in by Wednesday 16th December 2009. There will be a recruitment day Friday 4th December and interviews will be held on Wednesday and Thursday 6th and 7th January 2010.
For the course starting Monday 19th April 2010
Applications must be in by Wednesday 7th April 2010. There will be a recruitment day Tuesday 30th March 2010 and interviews will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday 13th and 14th April.
For the course starting 4th October 2010
Applications must be in by Thursday 16th September 2010. There will be a recruitment day Friday 10th September 2010 and interviews will be held on Wednesday and Thursday 6th and 7th January.
