If you have completed your Level 1 and are motivated and wish to prepare yourself for a career in the automotive industry, then this is the course for you.

Is this course right for me?

This one year course is a full-time progression from the Level 1 Automotive Maintenance course.

If you have gained an apprenticeship you can do the Level 2 in Automotive Maintenance.

This is a practical subject, half of the course is based in our custom built workshops where you will develop your hands-on skills on a range of College vehicles and equipment, with the remainder of the time studying theory in our fully resourced classrooms.

  • There is normally no direct entry to this course, you would need to progress from the successful completion of previous level in this subject area or similar
  • Each application is considered on individual merit
  • Entry is subject to attending a course information session or informal interview
  • Successful completion of relevant programme (including skills) and decision from progression board meeting

Mandatory units to be studied include:

  • Health, Safety and Good Housekeeping in the Automotive Environment
  • Supporting Job Roles in the Automotive Work Environment
  • Materials, Fabrication, Tools and Measuring Devices in the Automotive Environment
  • Routine Light Vehicle Maintenance
  • Light Vehicle Combustion Engine Units and Components
  • Light Vehicle Electrical Units and Components
  • Light Vehicle Chassis Units and Components
  • Transmission and Driveline Units and Components
  • Fuel, Ignition, Air and Exhaust System Units and Components

Additional units available from the optional groups to make up the remaining credits for the qualification.

You may need to study an additional skills course depending on:
  • the course you are taking at College
  • what grades you gained in your GCSE Maths and/or English Language

Learners are able to complete either the full qualification or certain units or elements through the medium of Welsh/bilingually. Visit our Welsh Language in the College page to find out what else is available to you.

  • Continuous assessment during the course
  • Practical assessment during the course
  • Online examination

On successful completion, if you gain an apprenticeship, you will be able to move on the Level 3 apprenticeship.

Following successful completion of this course learners could look to progress to a higher level course at the College, seek an appropriate Apprenticeship or go directly into employment.

  • Stationery - you will be told about any specific items before you start the course
  • Text books - you will be told about any specific items before you start the course, most text books are available to loan from the college library or online libraries
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Clothing, which you can purchase online before you start the course

  • No tuition fee
  • We are waiving the Administration Fee for the academic year 2024/25
  • You will need to pay a £55 engineering workshop fee each year before you start the course
  • You can rent a locker for £10 per year this will be refunded if the locker remains undamaged and keys are returned
