Bursary takes catering student behind the scenes
- Posted by: pembscollegesuperadmin
Thanks to the Haverfordwest Soroptimists and a Pembrokeshire College FADE Bursary, catering student Danielle Davies got to work behind the scenes at Castell Howell in Cross Hands.
Having completed Level 3 programmes in both Professional Catering and Supervision and Leadership at Pembrokeshire College in June, Danielle was keen to gain some work experience to set her CV apart from the rest.
Thanks to the sponsorship, Danielle was able to accept a nine week placement with Castell Howell. Working in their Farm Fresh division, the placement allowed Danielle to pursue her dream of becoming a development chef in the future.
Danielle commented: “I am really grateful to both the Soroptimists and Pembrokeshire College for giving me the opportunity to undertake such a long work placement. At College I learnt so many different techniques and gained lots of experience both front of house and in the kitchens. The work placement allowed me to see what it is like to work in a mass production environment and also gave me a taste of new product development.”
Since completing her placement, Danielle has been offered the position of Cook in Charge at St Davids Primary School and is looking forward to starting soon.
Front of House lecturer at the College, Rose Butler commented: “The Bursary’s are so important to allow students to experience different sectors within the hospitality industry so they can find where their niche lies. Previous students have undertaken placements at Gleneagles, Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons and Le Gavroche. It is great to watch students growing in confidence throughout the course and many go on to be offered permanent positions following periods of work experience.”
With industry standard kitchens, and a restaurant and coffee shop that are open to the public, Pembrokeshire College’s catering courses equip young people with the skills needed to pursue a career in the hospitality industry. Whether they want to work alongside Michelin starred chefs or become a front of house professional, the journey starts at Pembrokeshire College. More student successes can be found in the Restaurant brochure available via the College website.
