Is this course right for me?

This introductory course is aimed at those who may have little or no experience in the subject and has been designed as the first step in the ladder for professional development for aspiring and practising counsellors.

This course is not suitable for anyone who has had a recent bereavement or trauma and not suitable for personal therapy.

 

  • No formal entry requirements
  • Life skills, experience and maturity are important
  • You should have some basic computer skills including being able to save and locate files and access websites
  • The learner must be over the age of 19

Designed to develop communication skills and cover the skills and qualities needed in a counsellor such as paraphrasing, open and closed questions, verbal and non-verbal communication.

Modules to be studied include:

  • Communication skills used in Counselling
  • Paraphrase statements
  • Difference between open and closed questions
  • Verbal and non-verbal communications
  • Barriers to communication in the Counselling settings
  • Non-judgemental behaviour

Learners have the option to complete course assessment/assignments or elements of the course through the medium of Welsh or bilingually. Visit our Welsh Language in the College page to find out what else is available to you.

  • Continuous assessment during the course
  • Portfolio of evidence

On successful completion learners may wish to do the Level 2 Counselling Studies course.
