A previous student from Pembrokeshire College has created a short ‘ident’ film for S4C which aired earlier this month.
On completing his course at the College, former Graphic Design Student, Robert Lange went on to study a degree in Graphic Communication at Cardiff Metropolitan University. Now in his second year, he got the opportunity to pitch his idea for a St.David’s Day themed film to S4C.
Robert worked with a group of four other students from his degree group to respond to the brief which called for an ‘ident’ – a short sequence film shown between programmes to identify the channel. Robert explained, “S4C said they wanted to show a clear connection with Wales and St.David’s Day without it being too cliché. My group came up with the idea to create an image of a daffodil made up of a number of thumb prints. The idea behind this was that the finger print is a form of personal identity and we use them to communicate, to navigate screens, I think S4C liked that connection to the 21st century. We were so pleased when our idea was chosen!”
The final 30 second ident was produced across three different locations in Cardiff over a period of a few weeks, filming at the Hayes Studios in Penarth, editing at S4C and working on sound effects at Cranc studios in Cardiff. The final piece shows a group of people coming close to camera and putting their yellow-painted thumbprints on the lens to form a daffodil.
Robert is proud of his television debut and hopes to continue to work alongside other creatives on similar projects once he graduates. Senior Pembrokeshire College Lecturer in Graphic Design, Louise Sheppard enthused, “It’s great to know how our students are getting on after College and we’re very proud of Robbie. He was an excellent student with strong design skills – and plenty of ambition. I’m so pleased he’s doing well and have no doubt he’ll enjoy a successful third year!”
While Robert is enjoying every minute of his degree, he still hasn’t forgotten his Pembrokeshire roots, “Studying Graphic Design at Pembrokeshire College is definitely one of the best things I’ve done. The course helped me to get to where I am today and I look back and think how much it has contributed to my future and aspirations. My tutors were devoted and passionate and inspired me throughout my studies.”
