WorldSkills Success for Pembrokeshire College Students
Talented Pembrokeshire College learners proved once again that they are among some of the best young trainees in the UK when they joined 45 students from across Wales to bring back medals from this year’s WorldSkills UK competition held at the NEC, Birmingham during November.
Christopher Caine, an apprentice with Keating Joinery, brought home a silver medal in joinery while catering student Sam Everton brought home bronze in the Professional Cookery competition.
Meanwhile Mainport apprentice Orry Franklin was highly commended in Construction Metalwork and Billy Miller secured joint third place in the Inclusive Skills, Carpentry competition.
In total nine Pembrokeshire College students secured places in the WorldSkills UK Finals after scoring highly in the national qualifiers. Students secured places to compete in graphic design, confectionery, culinary arts, beauty therapy, carpentry (entry level), joinery, construction metalwork, and welding. The students were among over 600 of the UK’s most talented apprentices and learners battling it out across 50 different skill areas to be named the ‘best in the UK’ in their chosen skill.
Dr Neil Bentley, Chief Executive, WorldSkills UK said: “All of the apprentices and learners who took part in the WorldSkills UK
Competitions are truly inspirational. Our research shows that WorldSkills UK Competitions teach young people the employability skills that businesses are crying out for. By devising and managing skills competitions that are based on international standards, we can ensure more young people are being equipped with the right skills to help UK businesses better compete globally.”
Christopher and Sam must now wait to see if they are invited to join the training programme to represent the UK at the international WorldSkills Competitions, which will take place in Russia in 2019.
